James Astin

Dr. James B. Astin

Program Director, Associate Degree in Advanced Personal Training and Exercise Science

Dr. Astin joined Bryan College in 2007 as an instructor and was later promoted to Program Director. He recently accepted the title and position of Program Director for the Bryan University Online Fitness Program as well.

Dr. Astin holds a degree in Ancient Philosophy. He has been certified with ACE, ISSA, ASFA, ACSM, and NASM as well as being a professional IDEA member. Dr. Astin began his career in fitness in 1984 leading self-defense and group exercise classes at a Catholic rectory. He was a peer coach in the Military Intelligence Corps for 3 years helping members meet their strict fitness requirements.

In 1989, he competed as a power lifter, winning the NC State championship and other titles leading to his contention for a World Record. Dr. Astin spent 2 years as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at SUNY Canton. He worked as a nutritional research designer for Dr. Shawna Stern at the Tucson Veteran Hospital and taught seminars on native aliment self-selection.

For 14 years he owned and operated his own business that offered personal training, nutritional consulting, martial arts, wilderness expedition, and survival training. Later, from 2000-2005, he worked for the Bally Corporation where he held the title of top seller leading to his title of Master Trainer which included his preparation of other personal trainers in the west coast division.

His additional interests include martial arts since 1974 and he is a dedicated student of human potential.

John Bauer

John Bauer

Instructor, Associate Degree in Advanced Personal Training and Exercise Science

John Bauer is an instructor in the Associate Degree in Advanced Personal Training and Exercise Science department at Bryan College. His background includes 11 years of experience in weight management, corrective exercise, performance enhancement, and club management.

John holds a Bachelors of Science from California University of Pennsylvania. John also holds NASM CPT, CES, PES and Titleist CGFI certifications. His additional interests include working out and all things fitness. He is a big fan of competing in and watching all sports. In his free time he enjoys reading and traveling.

Hilary Herndon

Hilary Herndon

Instructor, Associate Degree in Advanced Personal Training and Exercise Science

Hilary Herndon is an instructor in the Associate Degree in Advanced Personal Training and Exercise Science department at Bryan College. Her background includes 12 years of experience in business management, sales, and behavior.

Hilary studied at California State University, Sacramento. Hilary holds certifications with NASM, APEX, TRX, IDEA, the Olympic Weightlifting association and is a NSCA Professional member. Her additional interests include track and field, gymnastics, volleyball, wakeboarding, snowboarding, travel, and family.

David Martinez

David Martinez

Instructor, Associate Degree in Advanced Personal Training and Exercise Science

David Martinez is an instructor in the Associate Degree in Advanced Personal Training and Exercise Science department at Bryan College Sacramento. His background includes 8 years of experience in corrective exercise, sports performance, TRX, yoga, group fitness, and kettlebells. Davis holds a U.S. Master of Fitness Instructor degree and is currently attending Physical Therapy Assistant school.

David also holds a NASM CPT, CES, PES and Russian Kettlebell certifications. His additional interests include snowboarding, cycling, running, kettlebells, skydiving, and being a lifetime martial arts student.

Rex Owens

Rex Owens is an instructor in the Associate Degree in Advanced Personal Training and Exercise Science department at Bryan College. His background includes over 20 years of experience in performance nutrition, pre/postnatal fitness, MAT-Muscle Activation Technique, spinal rehabilitation, and small group personal training.Rex holds a BS in Sports Management and an MS in Corrective Exercise and Injury Prevention. Rex also holds certifications as a Resistance Training Specialist (RTS), FreeMotion Master Trainer, Titleist Golf Fitness Instructor, ACSM-HFI, NASM-CPT, PES, and CES, TRX Group Personal Trainer, ACE-Certified Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant, Clinical Exercise Specialist, and is Dotfit/APEX certified. His additional interests include wrestling and reading.

Daniel Ramos is an instructor in the Associate Degree in Advanced Personal Training and Exercise Science department at Bryan College. His background includes 10 years of experience in performance enhancement and corrective exercise.Daniel holds a BA in Business Administration. Daniel also has certifications with NASM-CPT, PES, and CES as well as NSCA-CSCS. His additional interests include combat and strength sports.

Milly Nuñez is a teaching assistant in the Associate Degree in Advanced Personal Training and Exercise Science department at Bryan College. Her background includes one year of experience in personal training and group training combined with 10 years of business experience.

Milly holds a BS in Managerial Economics with a minor in Spanish and a Masters in Business Administration. Milly also has certifications with ACE and NASM. Her additional interests include traveling.
